“Press Freedom on Trial: Are India’s Journalists Truly Free Today?”
Throwback Insight | IPI Report (April–September 2022)
“India: Journalists Face Attacks, Legal Harassment, and Censorship” —
A report by the International Press Institute (IPI) revealed 83 violations of press freedom in just six months across India.
Journalists faced:
⚠️ Physical assaults & intimidation
⚖️ Legal harassment under repressive laws
🚫 Online censorship and media shutdowns
🔒 Arbitrary arrests — 20 journalists detained
🌐 Internet blackouts, including Kashmir’s record 552-day shutdown
These findings reflected a deepening crisis for independent journalism and press freedom, as voices of dissent and truth continued to be silenced — both online and on the ground.
“The role of the press is to question power — not to fear it.”
The question for today:
Have things really changed for journalists since then — or has fear simply become the new normal in Indian media?
Let’s continue to defend the space for free, fair, and fearless journalism — because democracy cannot exist without a free press.
