Sugitha Sarangaraj — Breaking Barriers as Tamil TV’s First Female News Editor

In an industry where women remain underrepresented, Sugitha Sarangaraj has emerged as a trailblazer in Tamil television media, becoming the first female news editor to lead a TV news channel.

Globally, only 24% of top editors are women, and in India, just 11% of women journalists cover politics and government, highlighting gender disparity in media roles. Traditionally, women in Tamil Nadu TV have been limited to health, features, and gender-related reporting.

Since 2012, Sugitha has moderated prime-time political debates, challenging norms and paving the way for more women to assume leadership roles in newsrooms. Her journey exemplifies gender sensitivity, resilience, and breaking stereotypes in journalism.

Will more women journalists follow Sugitha Sarangaraj’s path to leadership, transforming the face of Indian media?
