Community Radio: The Ban on Grassroots News Broadcasts

0
72

Community radio stations in India face a critical hurdle: they are legally prohibited from broadcasting independent news and current affairs content, and are only permitted to relay government-approved All India Radio broadcasts. This stifling regulation actively prevents marginalized rural communities from generating hyper-local, relevant reporting.

The Bharat Media Association strongly urges authorities to lift this blanket ban on original content. True media democratization requires empowering local community radios to report on their own grassroots issues independently, without being forced to rely solely on state-sponsored information.
