SC Halts SLAPP Gag Orders Against the Indian Press
The Supreme Court has fiercely defended the investigative powers of the press against Strategic Litigation against Public Participation (SLAPP) suits. Stressing that pre-trial ex-parte injunctions act as a death sentence for public-interest journalism, the apex court warned against wealthy entities gagging the media. Emphasizing the public's right to know, the Court ruled that such interim injunctions stifle democratic debate.
