Justice for Mukesh Chandrakar — Murdered for Exposing Corruption
On January 3, 2025, the body of Mukesh Chandrakar, a freelance journalist from Chhattisgarh, was discovered in a septic tank at a contractor’s property in Bijapur district. His death followed a December 2024 report on alleged corruption in a ₹120 crore road construction project in Bastar, which had prompted a government inquiry.
The investigation revealed that Mukesh was attacked with steel bars by his cousin Ritesh Chandrakar, along with two accomplices, Mahendra Ramteke and Dinesh Chandrakar. They then disposed of his body in the septic tank, which was subsequently sealed with concrete slabs.
In response to this tragedy, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister announced a ₹10 lakh ex-gratia relief for Mukesh’s family and pledged to establish a “Patrakar Bhavan” (Journalist’s House) in his memory.
This case underscores the perilous conditions faced by journalists in India, particularly those investigating corruption. Mukesh’s murder highlights the urgent need for enhanced protection and accountability for media professionals.
When journalists are silenced for uncovering the truth, will we stand with them or allow fear to stifle free press?
