Intense Heatwave Scorches Jammu & Kashmir: Record Temperatures Raise Alarms

Jammu/Srinagar, May 23, 2025 — Jammu and Kashmir are currently reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels across the region. On Wednesday, Jammu recorded a blistering 41.4°C, marking its hottest day of the year so far. In a rare and alarming development, Srinagar also reported its highest May temperature in over six decades, highlighting the severity of the current climatic conditions.

According to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the extreme weather is being driven by a prolonged dry spell and a delayed western disturbance. The combination of scorching sun, low humidity, and warm winds has resulted in heatwave conditions across both the Jammu plains and parts of the Kashmir Valley — regions more commonly known for their temperate climate.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is witnessing unseasonal heat that is both discomforting and potentially dangerous. Local residents have expressed concern, noting that this kind of heat is extremely unusual for the valley, especially during the month of May.

In light of the rising temperatures, authorities have issued public health advisories urging citizens to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Schools have been advised to adjust schedules or limit outdoor engagements for children. Hospitals and emergency services have also been put on alert for potential cases of heatstroke and dehydration.

Environmental experts warn that such temperature spikes may be indicative of broader climate changes affecting the Himalayan region. “What we are seeing is not just a weather anomaly, but possibly a warning signal of the region’s growing vulnerability to global warming,” said a senior climate researcher based in Srinagar.

The heatwave is expected to persist for the next few days, with only a slight possibility of relief from isolated thundershowers by the weekend. In the meantime, power consumption has surged as people turn to fans and cooling systems, prompting concerns about energy demand and grid pressure.

With water sources already running low in certain parts of Jammu, local authorities are preparing contingency measures to ensure sufficient supply and mitigate potential shortages.

This heatwave, while temporary, serves as a stark reminder of the region’s changing climate dynamics — and the urgent need for long-term resilience planning in even the traditionally cooler areas of India.
