Standing Our Ground: The Urgent Need for a Comprehensive Journalist Protection Act

Journalism has always been a high-risk profession, but the challenges of 2026 are unique. From physical threats in conflict zones to digital harassment and legal "SLAPP" suits (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation), the pressure on the individual reporter is at an all-time high.

Recent global events, including the 2026 Iran War, have shown that the "PRESS" insignia is often ignored by those in power. Closer to home, regional journalists in India frequently face intimidation when uncovering local corruption or "Shadow Economies."

  1. Legal Shielding: We demand stricter laws that penalize those who physically assault media persons on duty.

  2. Digital Protection: Journalists need a safety net against coordinated online trolling and state-led digital surveillance.

  3. Welfare & Insurance: Every field reporter, including freelancers, must have access to comprehensive health and life insurance provided by the state or media bodies.

A journalist in fear cannot tell the truth. The Bharat Media Association stands committed to being the voice for the voiceless and the shield for those who dare to ask questions. We urge the government to fast-track the Journalist Protection Act to ensure that democracy doesn't breathe its last in silence.

"United for Rights. Driven by Ethics. Moving towards Progress."
