Digital Provenance & Deepfakes
Tech Giants to Mandate "C2PA" Labels for News Media
To combat the surge of political deepfakes during regional elections, major social media platforms are now requiring a "C2PA" (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) label on all news photos and videos.
Field reporters now need to ensure their cameras or editing software support digital "watermarking" to prove their footage is authentic and hasn't been tampered with by AI.
Press Freedom Rankings: India at 159th
Global Press Freedom Index 2026 – India Drops Further
The latest Reporters Without Borders (RSF) report has ranked India 159th out of 180 countries.
Increased censorship, the use of "Section 69A" blocking orders, and the targeting of independent digital media houses are cited as primary reasons.
BMA is calling for the immediate implementation of the Journalist Protection Act to provide a legal shield against arbitrary arrests and intimidation.
AI and the "Truth Gap"
Human-Led Journalism Becomes a "Premium" Service in 2026
A new industry report (Reuters Institute 2026) shows that over 20% of online news is now low-quality, AI-generated content (often called "AI Slop").
As AI makes it cheaper to mass-produce news, verified human reporting is becoming more valuable but harder to fund.
BMA Advocacy: We are pushing for a "Human Verified" badge for our members to distinguish real investigative work from AI-generated summaries.
The 3-Hour Takedown Rule
New Mandatory Timeline for "Unlawful" Content Removal
As of February 2026, the government has drastically shortened the response time for digital platforms.
Digital Platforms must now remove content deemed "unlawful" by the government within 3 hours of receiving an order (down from the previous 36 hours).
For smaller news houses and independent creators, this creates an immense technical and legal burden to respond to notices in almost real-time.
The Digital "Code of Ethics" Crisis
Independent Journalists to be Treated as "Registered Publishers" Under New IT Draft
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has released the Draft IT (Digital Media Ethics Code) Second Amendment Rules, 2026.
For the first time, ordinary social media users and independent digital journalists who comment on "news and current affairs" may be treated on par with large news corporations.
The Impact: This means individual YouTubers, X (Twitter) influencers, and...
The Crumbling Pillar - Why the Decline of Indian Media is Every Citizen's Crisis

As the self-proclaimed "Fourth Pillar" of democracy, has the media turned into a mere PR machine for corporate and political powers? An international critique recently highlighted the stark reality of how news is managed in India, and it’s time we...
