President’s Rule Extended in Manipur Amid Ongoing Unrest

The Indian Parliament has officially approved an extension of President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months, starting from August 13, 2025. This decision comes in response to the continuing ethnic tensions and law-and-order issues that have plagued the state since early 2023.

The move was recommended by the Union Home Ministry, which cited the inability of the state government to maintain peace and normalcy despite ongoing efforts. Manipur has been in a state of political and social turmoil, especially after violent ethnic clashes broke out between communities, leading to numerous casualties, displacement of thousands, and deepening mistrust among groups.

While security forces remain deployed in sensitive areas and curfews are intermittently enforced, normal governance remains disrupted. As a result, central control through President’s Rule was deemed necessary to ensure administrative continuity and the protection of civilians.

The extension aims to provide more time for peace-building measures, dialogue between communities, and restoration of civil administration. The central government has also assured that efforts toward a long-term resolution and restoration of democratic processes will continue.
