Assam - Hundreds of people from the Sonowal Kachari tribal community took to the streets in a powerful demonstration against the prolonged delay in conducting elections for their Autonomous Council, whose official term expired in February 2024.

The protest, marked by placards, slogans, and impassioned speeches, was organized to draw the government’s attention to what the community calls a "serious democratic lapse" and a violation of tribal rights. Protesters gathered in large numbers across key areas of Assam, urging the state and central governments to immediately announce the election schedule and reinstate democratic functioning within the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC).

Leaders of the movement emphasized that the delay has hindered the delivery of welfare schemes, disrupted administrative continuity, and weakened tribal self-governance. More than just elections, the protestors demanded long-standing constitutional recognition by inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would grant them greater autonomy, legislative authority, and protection of cultural identity.

"This is not just a protest — it is a fight for our constitutional rights and dignity. We demand full administrative powers and representation under the Sixth Schedule like other tribal councils in Assam," said one of the community leaders during the demonstration.

The Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, established to safeguard the socio-political interests of the tribe, is currently functioning without an elected body — a matter that has led to widespread dissatisfaction and questions over the government’s commitment to tribal governance and inclusion.

Protesters have warned that the movement will intensify if no concrete action is taken soon. A formal memorandum was also submitted to state officials, urging immediate steps to uphold tribal rights, ensure timely elections, and consider constitutional upgrades to their council's status.
