On July 17, 2025, banks across Meghalaya—including SBI branches—remained closed to observe U Tirot Sing Day, marking the freedom fighter and Khasi chief’s death anniversary. The regional holiday is listed in RBI’s July banking calendar, while banks elsewhere in India stayed open. U Tirot Sing led the Anglo‑Khasi War (1829–33), resisting British land control before being captured in 1833 and dying in prison in Dhaka in 1835. His legacy is commemorated annually, with the Tirot Sing Caves serving as historical tourist attractions.
