The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reprimanded the Odisha government for failing to compensate the family of Manorama Dongori, a pregnant woman who died in Rayagada jail under alleged medical negligence. Despite a direction issued in December 2024 to pay ₹2 lakh within six weeks, the government has submitted no proof of payment. NHRC has demanded the full medical records and payment evidence by August 21, 2025, warning of possible coercive action under human rights laws if unfulfilled. The case sheds light on institutional accountability gaps.
