National Health Claims Exchange Under Joint Watch to Tackle Hospital Overcharging

HYDERABAD – July 17, 2025 – In a significant move aimed at reining in escalating healthcare costs, the Indian government is reportedly planning a major overhaul for the National Health Claims Exchange. Currently managed solely by the Health Ministry, the exchange is set to come under the joint supervision of the Finance Ministry and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

This strategic shift, a result of an internal review, is primarily designed to combat the persistent issue of overcharging by hospitals, particularly for insured patients. By bringing the exchange under a dual regulatory umbrella, the government seeks to tighten controls, significantly enhance the bargaining power of insurance providers, and establish more consistent and transparent pricing across the healthcare sector.|

The overarching objective behind this initiative is to make health insurance more accessible and affordable for the common citizen, ensuring that inflated treatment costs do not act as a deterrent to seeking necessary medical care. The change is expected to foster greater accountability and standardization within the healthcare billing ecosystem.
