Voices Lost Across Borders: When Language Becomes a Barrier to Citizenship

In a shocking incident in late June, six innocent people including a pregnant woman and three children were taken into custody by Delhi Police simply because they spoke Bengali. Even though they had proper Indian identity documents, they were labelled as “Bangladeshis” and forcefully deported across the border by the BSF (Border Security Force).

They were ordinary people from Birbhum, West Bengal trying to earn a living, care for their families, and live in peace. But due to linguistic profiling and lack of due legal process, they were treated as outsiders in their own country.

What Went Wrong?

  • They had Indian IDs – but were still doubted.

  • No court notice, no investigation, no justice.

  • They were pushed across the border without explanation.

This is not just a mistake. This is a violation of citizenship rights, a misuse of power, and a failure to protect the dignity and freedom of our people.

The Real Cost

  • Families were torn apart.

  • Children faced trauma they may never forget.

  • Trust in the system was broken.

When a person is treated like a criminal just because of the language they speak — it’s not just about one community, it’s about the freedom and safety of every Indian citizen.

Why We Must Speak Up

This is not just their story it’s our story as a nation. If we remain silent today, tomorrow someone else may face the same injustice. Let’s build a country where:

  • Language is not a crime.

  • Citizens are protected, not punished.

  • Justice is not selective.

What Can Be Done?

  1. Stronger laws to prevent wrongful deportations.

  2. Police accountability in identity checks.

  3. Public awareness on rights and due process.

 Together for Justice

India is built on unity in diversity. Let’s not let fear or discrimination tear that apart. Let’s raise our voice for those who lost theirs and ensure that no citizen is ever wrongly silenced again.

Because every Indian deserves respect, identity, and justice.
