In a quiet corner of Assam, near the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, lives a man whose work is as grand as nature itself yet almost invisible to the world.

This is the story of Jadav "Molai" Payeng, an ordinary man with an extraordinary mission to fight deforestation and climate change single-handedly, one tree at a time.

It All Began in 1979…

At the young age of 16, Jadav witnessed the devastation caused by floods on Majuli Island the largest river island in the world. After one such flood, he came across the lifeless bodies of snakes that had died due to the unbearable heat on a barren sandbar. There was no shade, no forest  just scorching sun and sand.

This moment shook him.

While everyone else moved on, Jadav decided he would never let the land die like that again.

 A One-Man Mission

Armed with just a few bamboo seedlings and deep love for nature, he began planting trees on the sandy bank — alone.

Every day, he carried water, planted saplings, and protected them from cattle and storms. It was just him no support, no salary, no recognition.

He planted:

• Bamboo groves,

• Native trees,

• Medicinal plants,

• And ensured the ecosystem balanced itself.

Year after year. In silence.

The Miracle Forest

Today, that small effort has turned into Molai Forest a thriving 1,360-acre green paradise.

It’s larger than New York’s Central Park.

This man-made forest is now home to:

• Elephants (regular herds of over 100),

• Bengal tigers,

• One-horned rhinos,

• Deer,

• Vultures, and hundreds of species of birds, insects, and plants.

It is an entire ecosystem created by one man.

 Recognition Came Late

Jadav worked for over 30 years in silence before the world noticed.

In 2007, a journalist accidentally discovered his forest while on an assignment. Soon, the world started calling him "The Forest Man of India."

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. His story was also turned into documentaries and short films, and he has spoken at universities and summits globally.

But Jadav? He still lives modestly in a small hut, rides his bicycle, and continues planting trees.

A Message for the World

“Cutting down trees is like killing us all slowly. We are not above nature. We are part of it.”
