Haryana Bans Civilian Drone Use Statewide Amid Heightened Security Alert Until May 25

Chandigarh, – Haryana’s Home Department has announced a temporary ban on the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones across the state until May 25, citing heightened security concerns following recent escalations between India and Pakistan.

The directive was issued by Sumita Misra, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), in an official communication sent to all Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners, and Superintendents of Police. She emphasized that this preventive measure is critical to safeguarding sensitive locations and addressing potential security threats during this period of heightened vigilance.

Exemptions for Security Forces

The restriction does not apply to drones operated by the Indian Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Haryana Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), or the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). These agencies may continue to operate UAVs as part of their security and disaster response duties.

Misra also directed law enforcement agencies and district administrations to intensify drone monitoring and surveillance in their jurisdictions and to report any unauthorized drone activity immediately.

Strict Reporting and Response Protocol

“If any drone or UAV is sighted in restricted airspace, it must be reported to the nearest police station or relevant authority without delay,” Misra stated. In cases of doubt or suspicion about a drone's origin or intent, bomb disposal squads must be deployed for prompt inspection.

Public Cooperation and Awareness

She urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious flying objects or UAV activity to local authorities. Awareness campaigns are set to be launched via print and electronic media to inform residents about the drone ban and their role in supporting security measures.

Temporary Approvals for Official Use

Government departments that require drones for official survey or project work during the restriction period must first obtain clearance from the respective Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police.

In addition, private individuals and drone operators have been instructed to strictly adhere to the ban. Authorities will ensure the clear communication of the order and associated guidelines to all concerned parties.

The drone ban comes amid a tense atmosphere following intense drone and missile exchanges between India and Pakistan earlier this month, which prompted a ceasefire agreement on May 10. The temporary restriction is part of Haryana’s broader security strategy to ensure peace and safety in the region.
