Delhi Capitals Request Venue Shift for Mumbai Clash Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal has appealed to the BCCI to consider shifting their crucial clash against Mumbai Indians out of Mumbai due to persistent unseasonal rainfall and a yellow alert issued for the city. In a letter addressed to the board, Jindal cited the importance of the fixture and referenced a similar decision made earlier in the tournament—when the RCB vs SRH match was moved to Lucknow due to bad weather in Bengaluru.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, Jindal emphasized the pattern of poor weather affecting parts of South and Southwest India this May due to untimely monsoon activity. Bengaluru already saw the RCB vs KKR match washed out, and Hyderabad has also faced consistent rain, forcing SRH’s final home game to be moved to Delhi. Mumbai has also been hit with continuous downpours, with more rain expected on the day of the match.

“The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out,” Jindal wrote. “Just as the RCB vs SRH game was moved from Bengaluru in the interest of fairness and consistency, I request that tomorrow’s game also be shifted. We've known for nearly six days that heavy rain is expected on May 21 in Mumbai.”

This fixture holds significant playoff implications. Delhi Capitals, sitting on 13 points, must win both remaining matches to secure a spot in the knockout stage. A loss to Mumbai will eliminate them. However, if the game is abandoned due to rain, Mumbai Indians will move to 15 points and DC to 14. A subsequent MI win over Punjab Kings would confirm their place in the playoffs, regardless of the result in the PBKS vs DC fixture.

While Delhi Capitals' recent form has been inconsistent—winning just one of their last six matches, with one washed out—they remain in contention. Their hopes now hinge not just on performance, but on the weather holding up in Mumbai for what could be a season-defining encounter.

Jindal’s appeal is now under consideration as stakeholders await BCCI’s decision amid looming weather concerns.
