In the 1400s, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press.
Suddenly, books and newspapers spread like wildfire across Europe and later, the world.
👦🏽 “Why was this such a big deal?”
🧓🏽 Because now, knowledge wasn’t just for the rich. Everyone could read and learn. That’s how revolutions started!
Print media = Mass awareness + Social change
Here’s the story in India:
In 1556, a printing press was brought to Goa by the Jesuit missionaries from Portugal.
The first printed book in India was a religious text in Latin titled "Compendio Spiritual Da Vida Christaa" (Spiritual Compendium of Christian Life), printed in 1557.
Father Gaspar Caleza and João de Bustamante were among the first to operate the press in Goa.
The first Indian-language printed book was in Tamil, titled Thambiran Vanakkam, printed in 1578.
